What is electric-freeriding?
For us, electric-freeriding means having a motocross-like feeling with an e-bike. To achieve this, the e-bike must be built in such a way that it is possible to ride it off-road and with a throttle grip. This is not possible with most expensive e-bikes that you can buy in stores, and such an e-bike (or actually e-pedelec) cannot be converted afterwards to use a throttle grip. The motors, batteries and controllers must be able to deliver over 1500 watts of power, and the bikes must be adapted so that they can withstand these loads.
We have been building electric freeride bikes for over 10 years and have gained a lot of experience that we would like to pass on to you here. It has always been important to us that our bikes are suitable for off-road riding, but we have also learned to build them in such a way that they can be used for all other aspects that are important to us (commuting to work, shopping, longer tours, etc.).
That's enough words - in the following section you will find pictures of some of our electric freeride bikes...
How to build an electric-freeride bike ?
There are many ways to build an electric freeride bike. The foundation is a good, stable bike. Depending on your preference, this can be a hardtail mountain bike, a full-suspension downhill bike or something in between. Also a stable touring bike or a park or dirt jump bike can be well suited.
When it comes to the electrical components (motor, battery, controller, display, throttle grip, pedal sensors, etc.), you should think carefully about what you need, which of these components are compatible with each other and what suits the intended use of the bike.
As there are more and more conversion kits available, it has become quite confusing to choose a good motor, battery and other components that are suitable for this purpose.
Unfortunately, many of these conversion kits, individual parts and especially batteries are advertised with highly overrated performance and would lead to a poor bike and little fun to ride.
That is why we have created this page - to provide you with information on good products, so that your e-bike will be a success the first time you try it and you will enjoy it for a long time.
Since we have been building e-bikes for many years, both for ourselves and on behalf of customers, we now know exactly what works and what does not. Choosing the right parts for your conversion project is just as important as the correct assembly.
AWhen we started building e-bikes, we would have been happy if there had been a reliable handbook on this subject. It would have saved us a lot of time and money. Unfortunately, since there is still no such thing (at least not for more powerful e-bikes that are suitable for e-freeriding) and we hardly have the time to build e-bikes for customers these days, we decided to write our own guide. You can find all our experience on this topic in our E-Bike Blackbook, which provides and explains all the important information you need to build a perfect E-Bike on your first attempt.
You will also find various articles on the subject to help you make sense of it all. We hope you enjoy exploring, and who knows - maybe you too will soon be riding an electric freeride bike.
